There are several possible causes for this type of problem.

Challenger programs employ browser-based, Java-programmed, active content. When the program is not responding, the vast majority of cases include one or more of the following:

1. Your computer does not meet the Minimum System Requirements.
   
   
2. You did not answer "Yes" to the Security Warning to run the Outstart LMS Applet. If you answered "No", then the CIV program will NOT function correctly.
   
   
3. You are using an outdated or non-supported browser (Get Internet Explorer | Get Netscape)
   
   
4. You are missing Java or using an old version of Java. You need to install the latest Java.
   
   
5. You have a Java Popup "Ad" suppression program, also known as a "Pop Up Blocker," installed and running on your PC. If this type of software is installed on your PC, it must be temporarily disabled while running the Challenger CIV software. If software of this type is installed on your PC, please contact your software vendor for information about managing the Java Popup Ad suppression software installed on your PC. Or, you are running Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (sp2) installed and you have Popup Windows disabled. Click here for instructions of enabling Popup Windows.
   
   
6. If you are running Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (sp2) installed, you might have Active Content disabled. You need to enable Active Content.
   
   
7. Your anti-virus software may be inhibiting the window from launching. Use the anti-virus control to temporarily disable it. Consult the anti-virus documentation or technical support to learn how. Some anti-SPAM and anti-spyware security software may cause similar interference with the program.
   
   
8. Your Internet Service Provider may have installed software or offers a service to protect your computer from unwanted ads. Consult with you Internet Service Provider to learn how to disable it when needed.

Locating the version of Java installed in Internet Explorer:

1. Double-Click on the Internet Explorer blue "E" icon located on the Desktop.
2. The Internet Explorer window will open and initialize. Select the Tools menu and then click the Internet Options... menu item.
3. The Internet Options information window will open. Click on the Advanced tab to display the IE advanced options. The options are clustered into groups. The first two groups visible are Accessiblity and Browsing. Scroll down until you find the group labeled HTTP 1.1 settings. If the Java VM and browser Plug-ins are installed, it should be the next group after HTTP 1.1 settings.
   If Java is not installed, then the next options group after HTTP 1.1 settings is Multimedia.
   If Microsoft VM is listed, then Microsoft Java is installed.
   If Java(Sun) is listed, then Sun Java2 is installed.

Microsoft VM (MS Java):

1. Select the RUN menu item on the Start menu
2. Type cmd into the Open field and press the ENTER key or click the OK button.
3. A popup command line text window will appear.
4. Type the command jview and press the ENTER key.
5. At the end of the first display line, it should show the MSJava version number:
   Example:
   C:\jview
   Microsoft (R) Command-line Loader for Java Version 5.00.3810

Sun Java2:

1. Start Internet Explorer
2. IE Menu Selection: Tools | Internet Options | Advanced Tab
3. Look for a Java (Sun) section - The version number should be within the title line.

Caution: Only one version of Java should be active within Internet Explorer. An installation of Internet Explorer with multiple versions of Java running simultaneously will experience malfunctions.

Downloading and Installing the Sun Microsystems Java2 VM and Plugin:
Version 1.4.2_16 (for Microsoft Windows)

The Java 2 Runtime Environment version 1.4.2_16 is supported on Microsoft Windows 98 (1st and 2nd editions), Windows ME, Windows NT 4.0 (with Service Pack 6a), Windows XP Home, Windows XP Professional (with Service Pack 1+) and Windows 2000 Professional (with Service Pack 3+).

1. Click here to Download the JRE
   
2. The File Download dialog box appears.
   
3. Click Save.
   
4. The Save As dialog box appears.
   
5. Choose the folder location. (Save the file to a known location on your computer, for example, to your desktop).
   
6. If you have previously downloaded this version of JRE, you may be prompted:

8. Click Yes to replace.
   
9. Verify that the:

The installer "unpacks" the files needed to continue. A dialog box tracks this process, which takes less than a minute. After briefly displaying a logo splash screen, the installer presents the license agreement.

After reading the agreement, click the I accept the terms in the license agreement button to accept its terms and click Next to continue with the installation.

The installer then displays a Setup Type screen that allows you to choose either a typical or custom setup. We recommend that you choose the Typical option (the default selection) unless you are an advanced user who wants more precise control over the components that will be installed.

After ensuring that the Typical setup is selected, click the Next button to continue with the installation.

Now that you have given the installer all of the information it needs to proceed, progress boxes track the installation process.

A few brief dialogs confirm the last steps of the installation process, and a concluding message appears with the confirmation "Installation Completed OK." Click Finish to complete the installation.

Active Content refers to content on a Web site or in a HTML application that is either interactive or dynamic and contains such "action items" as animated GIFs, Java applets, JavaScript, streaming audio and video or ActiveX controls.

(For computers with Windows XP Service Pack 2)

Beginning with Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), a new visual feature named the Information Bar has been added to Internet Explorer. The Information Bar alerts you when Internet Explorer blocks files from being downloaded and/or active content from being executed. This article describes how to configure Internet Explorer to allow automatic execution of active content required by the Challenger Interactive Viewer.

To allow active content to execute from the Internet, from the local system, or from a CD, follow these steps:

1. Start Internet Explorer.
2. Click the Tools menu, and then click the Internet Options... menu item.
3. Click the Advanced tab in the Internet Options window.
4. Scroll down to the Security options group.
5. Click to select the Allow active content to run in files on My Computer option check box.
6. Click to select the Allow active content from CDs to run on My Computer option check box.
   Both of the above options should have a check mark in their boxes.
7. Click Apply and then OK, to accept these option revisions.
8. Close Internet Explorer.

(For computers with Windows XP Service Pack 2)

Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) added many new features to Internet Explorer. One of them is a new integrated pop-up window blocker. This article describes how to configure Internet Explorer to allow pop-up windows.

NOTE: This article does not pertain to any third party pop-up ad/window blockers. If you have a third party pop-up blocker installed, please consult your documentation for information on how to temporarily disable the program while accessing the Challenger Online Portal or running the Challenger Interactive Viewer. Popup blockers may also be contained within installed browser toolbars such as Google, Yahoo, MSN, AOL, NetZero ...etc. If you are running an Internet Security suite such as Norton or McAfee, then you probably have popup blockers in these applications.

To allow active content in pop-up windows to run from the Internet, from the local system, or from a CD, follow these steps:

1. Start Internet Explorer.
   
2. Click the Tools menu, and then place the cursor on the Pop-up Blocker menu item.
   
3. Wait for the Pop-up Blocker submenu to appear.
   
4. Click the Turn Off Pop-up Blocker to deactivate this feature.
   NOTE: This submenu item will toggle the Pop-up Blocker between an On and Off status.
   
5. Close Internet Explorer.

Challenger Autoplay Menu appears:

1. Start Microsoft Windows.
   
2. Temporarily disable any Anti-Virus software.

3. Mount the Challenger Disc in your PC's optical drive (CD-ROM, CD-R/RW, DVD-ROM, DVD-R/RW).
4. Wait for the Challenger Autoplay Menu to appear (on average 10 - 30 seconds).
5. Click the Courses button.
6. Select the course from the dropdown selection list.
7. Click the Install Now button on the course window.
8. Follow the InstallShield Installation Wizard instructions to install the product on your PC's hard disk.
9. After the installation successfully completes, close the Challenger Autoplay Menu window.
10. You may now remove the CD-ROM from the optical drive.
11. Use the Course's shortcut on the Desktop or the shortcut in the Challenger folder in the Start menu's program list to start the course.

Challenger Autoplay Menu does not appear: (Window's Autoplay may be disabled)

1. Start Microsoft Windows.
   
2. Temporarily disable any Anti-Virus software.
   (If you have an Anti-Virus system installed, please consult your documentation for information on how to temporarily disable or "sleep" the program while you are installing the CIV.)
3. Insert the Challenger Interactive Viewer CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.
4. Click the Start button, select Settings and then the Control Panel.
5. Within the Control Panel window, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
6. Select the Install/Uninstall tab, then click the Install button and follow the Microsoft Installation Wizard's instructions.

       - OR -
   Click the Start button and select the Control Panel in some versions of Windows XP.
   
5. Within the Control Panel window/menu, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
   
6. Select the Add New Programs Icon in the left margin of the window, then click the install from CD or Floppy button and follow the Microsoft Installation Wizard's instructions.

If you have installed another browser other than Internet Explorer, then it has probably reset the Windows Default Browser settings to itself. This will prevent the Challenger Interactive Viewer from correctly starting in IE.

There are three methods to allow the Challenger Interactive Viewer to start in IE if you have other browsers installed.

Method 1:
Resetting the Default Browser to Internet Explorer

1. Close all open applications.
2. Open Internet Explorer.
3. Select the Tools menu and then the Internet Options.
4. Click the Programs tab.
5. Check the status of the default browser option at the bottom of the window.
   "Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser."
   
6. Click the option box to place a check mark within the box.
   This option specifies whether you want Internet Explorer to remain your default Internet browser, even if you install additional Internet browsing software. When this check box is selected, each time Internet Explorer starts it checks to make sure it is still registered as the default Internet browser. If another program is registered as the default browser, Internet Explorer asks whether you want to restore Internet Explorer as your default browser.
   
7. Click Apply and then OK to close the Internet Options window.
8. Close Internet Explorer.
9. Restart IE and see if you receive a popup dialog window stating:
   "Internet Explorer is not currently your default browser. Would you like to make it your default browser?"
   
10. If you receive the prompt, go to step 11.
    If you do not receive the prompt, go to step 12 and then try Method 2.
11. Answer - Yes
12. Close IE.

Method 2:
Using the Reset Web Settings... Button

1. Close all open applications.
2. Open Internet Explorer.
3. Select the Tools menu and then the Internet Options.
4. Click the Programs tab.
5. Click the Reset Web Settings. button.
   Clicking this button will reset the default Internet Explorer settings for your home and search pages. A pop up panel will appear. Uncheck the Also reset my home page setting before clicking OK.
   Note: This only resets these settings if you have installed another Web browser after installing Internet Explorer and Internet Tools, and that browser has changed the default settings.
   
6. Click Apply and then OK to close the Internet Options window.
7. Close Internet Explorer.
8. Restart IE and see if you receive a popup dialog window stating:
   "Internet Explorer is not currently your default browser. Would you like to make it your default browser?"
   
9. If you receive the prompt, go to step 10.
   If you do not receive the prompt, go to step 11 and then try Method 3.
10. Answer - Yes
11. Close IE.

Method 3:
Setting HTML and HTM files to open in Internet Explorer:

This procedure may be required on new installations of Windows, if a default browser has not been specified.

By default, Internet Explorer checks to see if it is the default browser each time it starts. If Internet Document files (HTML or HTM) are associated with a different browser when Internet Explorer starts, Internet Explorer recognizes that it is not the default browser and prompts you to make it the default browser.

However, if your installation of Windows was not configured with a default browser, you may receive an "application not found" error message when starting a Challenger Interactive Viewer program.

To determine and change which program HTM and HTML files are associated with in Windows, follow these steps:

1. Close all open applications.
2. On the desktop, double-click My Computer.
3. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options., and then click the File Types tab.
4. In the Registered File Types box, scroll until you see the (HTM) - HTML Document and (HTML) - HTML Document entries in the Extensions column. The program that is listed on the Opens With line in the Detail for "HTM or HTML" Extensions area is the program that will launch and run these file types.
5. Select the HTM - HTML Document file type.
6. Click the Change Button
7. Select Internet Explorer in the Program window.
8. Make sure the option "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" is checked.
9. Click OK on the Open With window to accept your selections.
10. Select the HTML - HTML Files file type.
11. Click the Change Button
12. Select Internet Explorer in the Program window.
13. Make sure the option "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" is checked.
14. Click OK on the Open With window to accept your selections.
15. Click Apply and then OK on the Folder Options window to complete the changes.
16. Close the My Computer window.

Warning: Possible Third Party Application Blocking Changes:

If none of the above three methods will allow IE to become the default browser or allow the Challenger Interactive Viewer to start in IE, then you may have a third party application running that blocks changes to the windows settings for the default browser, browser home page, HTML applications, and .etc. These applications are available through third parties to prevent hackers and unscrupulous web sites from hijacking your browser. If you have such an application, please temporarily disable it. Complete one of the above methods, which will allow the CIV to start in IE, and then reactivate the application to lockdown your browser settings.

To keep Internet Explorer from automatically dialing into your ISP, make the following changes to the Internet Options:

1. Click on the Tools menu at the top of the browser window, and select Internet Options.
2. Click the Connections tab at the top of the Internet Options window.
3. Click the name of the ISP connection in the Dial-up and Virtual Private Network settings box.
4. Click the circle to the left of the option, Never dial a connection.
5. Click OK at the bottom of the Internet Options window.

If you are a current Challenger customer, who has received an "upgrade" or a more recent CD version of a program you currently own, as a standard courtesy, we highly recommend to all users that you SAVE YOUR SCORES from your current program before proceeding with CD installation of the revised edition.

To save your existing scores, please:

1. access your current (old) program (by launching the installed software or by running via your CD-ROM) and
   
2. choose ONE of the following options (Option C is RECOMMENDED for all users):
   

Note: This process should be repeated for any course in which you have completed an assessment but have not submitted CME hours or received a CME certificate.

A) If you are connected to the Internet and have email, open your current program CD and click the Email button on the course menu page. Your scores will be automatically sent to Challenger for archiving.

B) If you have a printer but do not have Internet access, click the Print button on the course menu page to launch the window containing your evaluation form and scores. Print the window containing the evaluation form and scores. Make a copy of the printout for your records. Send your completed evaluation form and scores by fax to 901-767-7019 or by mail to Challenger Corporation, Attn: CME Department, 5100 Poplar Avenue, Ste. 1410, Memphis, TN 38137. Include your full name on all correspondence.

C) To save scores without a printer or Internet connection, click the Save button on the course menu page. When prompted for a file name, add some text to the existing default filename to distinguish it from the default. This will save your recorded scores to a separate file from the default.

For example:
"C:\Documents and Settings\[myusername]\results.xml" becomes "C:\Documents and Settings\[myusername]\results_[name]_[date].xml"
(i.e. "C:\Documents and Settings\JoeSmith\results_JoeSmith_022804.xml" - Joe's results Feb. 28, 2004.)

OR

"C:\windows\java\results.xml" becomes "C:\windows\java\results_[name]_[date].xml"
(i.e. "C:\windows\java\results_JoeSmith_022804.xml" - Joe's results Feb. 28, 2004.)

Note: All scores from assessments taken online are automatically saved at Challenger. The above processes are recommended for scores saved directly to your personal computer via CD-ROM installed programs.

FiOS is a service provided by Verizon. FiOS is a "fiber optic service", which means that it can provide faster access to the Internet than the "copper wire" used to provide either DSL internet or cable TV service. If you live in an area where Verizon provides the FiOS service, and you choose to subscribe to it, then you should experience faster Internet connections which means your online access to Challenger's online portal will be faster as well. Otherwise, FiOS would have no impact on your Challenger service or capabilities.

Challenger EM Ultrasound is available by CD-ROM only due to the high volume of video and interactive content within the course. Through testing and beta-user feedback, we have found that even with high-bandwidth Internet connections, the large media files, search functionality, and custom quizzing platform found in Challenger EM Ultrasound are best suited for the CD-ROM format.

As Internet technologies improve, Challenger may investigate ways to allow online access to the course in a way we and our trusted clients feel is acceptable.

Hyperlink: An element in an electronic document that links to another place in the same document or to an entirely different document. Typically, you click on the hyperlink to follow the link. Hyperlinks are the most essential ingredient of all hypertext systems, including the World Wide Web.

Yes. Words that have hyper-links can have the color highlighting and underlines removed for both the Internet and the CD-ROM versions of our products. Here's how.

PLEASE NOTE: The procedure below will change the appearance of all links, not just the links in Challenger content, thus all linked text will look the same as the non-linked text. All linked words and phrases will no longer be color highlighted or underlined. The changes affect your Internet browser, not just the Challenger product, which means that for any Web page containing links, those links will not be visible unless your mouse pointer is over the link.


For Internet Explorer:

1. Click on the Tools menu, and select Internet Options.... The Internet Options window appears.
2. Click the Colors button in the lower left corner of the Internet Options window. The Colors window appears. The right side of this window controls the link colors.
3. Click on the button for Visited. The Color window appears. It displays a grid of colors from which a color may be selected.
4. Select the color black, and click OK. The Color window disappears.
5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for the Unvisited button.
6. Click OK in the Colors window. The Colors window disappears. The Internet Options window remains.
7. Click on the Advanced tab in the upper right corner of the Internet Options window. The view inside the window changes to a scrollable box of settings.
8. Scroll down until the item, Underline links, is displayed. Three selections are displayed beneath it:
   Always, Hover, Never.
9. Click on the circle to the left of Hover.
10. Click the OK button at the bottom of the Internet Options window. The Internet Options window disappears.

RESULT: Hyperlinked words are no longer highlighted with color nor are they underlined, but they will show an underline if and only if you place your mouse over the word you are interested in. Then you can click on the word of interest to execute the hyperlink.

Netscape Navigator:

1. Click the Edit menu, and select Preferences.... The Preferences window appears.
2. On the left side of the window, under Category, click on the right-pointing triangle to the left of Appearance. This will change the triangle to a down-pointing one, and several Appearance options appear.
3. Select the Colors option. The right side of the window has the word Colors at the top in bold text, and on the far right side is the Link Colors section of the window.
4. Click on the button for Visited. A color selector grid pops up.
5. Select the color black, and click OK. The color selector grid disappears.
6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for the Unvisited button.
7. Uncheck the Underline links box.
8. Click the OK button at the bottom of the Preferences window. The Preferences window disappears.

RESULT: Hyperlinked words are no longer highlighted with color nor are they underlined, but they will show an underline if and only if you place your mouse over the word you are interested in. Then you can click on the word of interest to execute the hyperlink.

SUMMARY: Words that are hyperlinked, whether viewed in the Internet Explorer browser or the Netscape Navigator browser, will now appear the same as other words. This is true for both the Internet and the CD-ROM versions of the course. If the mouse pointer is placed over a word or phrase, and the mouse pointer changes to the hand icon, then it is over a link. Clicking on the link will display the text or graphic will execute the hyperlink. The change affects the way your Web browser handles any link in any Challenger product. All links on any website will no longer be visible unless your mouse pointer is directly over the link.
