St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center Selects Challenger Program for ResidenciesTM
Memphis, TN 02/20/04 - Challenger Corporation announced today that it had been selected by St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center of Toledo, Ohio to provide training content and management information reporting for the emergency medicine residency at the hospital. Ranked by U.S. News & World Reports in the "Top 50" of American Best Hospitals, St. Vincent trains 36 residents in the specialty of emergency medicine. With this selection, Challenger is now the provider of online resident educational training and performance evaluation systems for seven prominent emergency medicine residency programs, as well as three other programs in family or general medicine.
According to Randy W. King, MD, FACEP, the Emergency Medicine Residency Director at St. Vincent, the Challenger Program was selected for six specific benefits:
- The Program's comprehensive stimuli materials and interactive format. Residents are adult learners and often respond better to multimedia type formats.
- The Question and Answer format.
- The ability to use the Program in a focused manner to complement topics under discussion or for residents on particular rotations: cardiology, pulmonary, and trauma.
- The ability to structure a remediation program based on resident problem areas.
- The reporting structure, which gives the director of the program feedback on resident progress.
- The offer of a lifetime subscription to the Challenger library for selected faculty.
Challenger owns the world's largest collection of approved electronic CME media, comprising over 2,050 approved hours of credit. Thousands of physicians and other clinicians rely upon Challenger materials to prepare for specialty board exams, re-certification, and continuous competency testing; to fulfill ongoing CME requirements; and to provide reference and patient-care decision support. Challenger serves the educational and training needs of over 385,000 practicing American primary care and hospital based physicians. The company has an installed base of over 15,000 clinical users, including 4000 "regular buyers." Also, ten residency programs in emergency and family medicine use the Challenger Program for Residenciesä for measurement of resident performance. Challenger products are approved for physician CME credit through joint sponsorships with prominent medical schools and specialty societies.
According to Challenger Senior Physician Representative Becca Sweeney, who negotiated the agreement, "Although St. Vincent is a regional facility, the emergency medicine residency there, like many other departments in the hospital, has a national reputation for high quality and superb training. We are honored to be chosen by such a prestigious institution to provide training and evaluation for the next generation of practicing emergency physicians. Challenger is working hand-in-hand with the leaders of acute and primary care education to meet the requirements of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) for focused, measurable, and productive outcomes in the training of young physicians."
