Challenger Corporation and Reagan Institute Agree To Jointly Develop Clinical Educational Materials

Memphis, TN 03/06/03 - Memphis-based software firm, Challenger Corporation, today announced that it had signed a long-term agreement with The Ronald Reagan Institute of Emergency Medicine at the George Washington University for the development of educational and training programs. The collaboration involves joint content development by staff, onsite testing of Internet-delivered physician training content, and a program for domestic and international distribution. Financial terms are confidential.

The motivation for the agreement is a mutual interest in designing and promulgating courses focused initially on infectious diseases, wound management, and disaster management. The courses will provide ambulatory and hospital-based physicians with the foremost updated content in these topical areas. Meanwhile, the Reagan Institute at GW will provide a beta site for testing content, rollout, presentation format and performance evaluation techniques. The programs will be offered via a full range of online and offline electronic media.

Challenger owns the world's largest collection of approved electronic CME media with over 1850 approved hours of credit. Thousands of physicians and other clinicians rely upon Challenger material to prepare for specialty board exams, recertification, and continuous competency testing; to fulfill ongoing CME requirements; and to provide reference and patient-care decision support. Challenger serves the educational and training needs of over 385,000 practicing American primary care and hospital based physicians. The company has an installed base of over 15,000 clinical users, including 4000 "regular buyers". Challenger products are approved for physician CME credit through joint sponsorships with prominent medical schools and specialty societies.

According to Challenger CEO Bob Sweeney, "We are delighted and honored to be in a joint sponsorship relationship with the Reagan Institute, George Washington University, and their clinical faculty. Our medical editing division anticipates the production of a highly engaging and instructive series of programs in these clinical areas. The first course will be completed this coming summer, under the direction of the Reagan Institute's Medical Education specialist Carol Scott, MD, and may be available for distribution by the end of the year. In the next year, we will create and feature a series of courses combining both exceptional clinical instruction and an up-to-date re-formattable knowledge base. Consumers will be able to pick and package content and instruction to meet highly tailored audience needs and expectations. With this new relationship, we are staying one step ahead on the learning curve for physician education in the 21st century."

The Ronald Reagan Institute of Emergency Medicine at the George Washington University Medical Center was established in 1991, in recognition of both the undisputed excellence of the Medical Center's Department of Emergency Medicine and its role in saving the life of President Reagan after a 1981 assassination attempt. The Reagan Institute is dedicated to saving lives by improving Emergency Care in the United States and around the world. The mission of the Reagan Institute is successfully achieved through initiatives related to the enhancement of emergency medical services throughout the world, the medical aspects of disaster planning, preparedness and response, and injury prevention and control. According to Rachel Mazzotta, Institute Executive Director, "This is a great opportunity for both of our organizations to build upon existing high quality innovative educational and training programs. We are very excited about this new relationship."
