I hope that you received my recent letter and brochure containing an overview of the Challenger Program for Residencies™ (CPR™).
Our current CPR™ subscribers use our flexible education platform for a wide variety of purposes. I thought you might like to
hear about how one of our CPR™ Library subscribers is employing CPR™, so this letter contains a brief case study of just such an
application!
John Peter Smith Hospital's OBGYN Residency Program is located in Ft. Worth, TX. The Program Director is David Moreland, MD.
JPS first purchased CPR™ in 2004, before Dr. Moreland became Program Director. They utilized the product as a self-study tool
for their residents for one year, but did not renew their subscription. When Dr. Moreland became Program Director in 2006, he
wanted to "think outside the box for how to convey information to residents in a more constructive manner".
Dr. Moreland was the driving force involved in bringing CPR™ back to JPS and integrating it into the program's required
curriculum.
When Dr. Moreland arrived at JPS, the program was using a traditional lecture format to teach didactics to their residents.
Residents were required to attend four hour lectures, but attendance was low and residents did not seem to be attentive to the
speakers. Dr. Moreland decided that he could use the time more effectively and began looking for ways to teach more
interactively.
Dr. Moreland subscribed to CPR™ on behalf of JPS. Beginning with the 2007-2008 academic year, Dr. Moreland cut the didactic
lectures down to two hours. He then assigned one Challenger module per week that coordinated with the lecture topic being
discussed, and gave the residents an hour and a half to complete the module. Dr. Moreland feels strongly that doing the CPRT
modules has been a much better use of time for his residents. They have to pay attention in order to complete the interactive
assignments and they can fulfill the assignments from anywhere, so they have no excuses for not completing what they have been
asked to do. The Challenger curriculum also hits on the educational objectives from ACOG.
He also found other benefits to the program from using CPR™. Dr. Moreland says that the biggest benefit for program directors
is that he can now document what his residents have actually studied and tested on. Using Challenger, Dr. Moreland has an easy
way to verify which residents are doing their work and what they are learning. Before instituting the CPR™ system, the only
objective feedback that the program would receive on resident performance was once a year when they received their CREOG scores.
Now, they can evaluate resident performance on an ongoing basis.
Dr. Moreland meets for formal evaluations with each resident twice per year. Now he has tangible results from their
performances on the Challenger modules to use as feedback to the residents on how they are doing on medical knowledge
components. Dr. Moreland also uses the CPRT system as part of his evaluation of the professionalism of his residents. He looks
at the compliance rate of his residents' completion of their assignments and addresses non-compliance as an issue of
professionalism. Overall, Dr. Moreland believes that CPR™ allows him to offer more objective feedback during these meetings.
Dr. Moreland has also been pleased that the Med-Challenger OBGYN material covers key topics, such as domestic abuse, that
faculty do not like to cover, but that is covered on the certification exam and is required knowledge for patient care.
Dr. Moreland's ultimate goal is to verify that the CPR™ assignments are increasing his CREOG scores and certification pass rate
over time. He is hoping to see an improvement over the next year or two from using Challenger as he further integrates
assignments into the residents' curriculum. In the meantime, Dr. Moreland is happy to have use of a system that offers an
easy-to-use format for his residents, has continually updated medical information, and allows him to obtain data on their
performance.
The management of Challenger Corporation is grateful to John Peter Smith Hospital's OBGYN Residency and their faculty for the
information used in this case study and for their collaboration with us to improve resident training and evaluation.
Once again, on behalf of all my physician and management colleagues at Challenger, let me wish you the best for 2008! We remain
ready to assist you and your staff as need and interest determine. Our commitment is to continued growth and improvement in
CPR™. Your comments, reactions and suggestions are always appreciated.
