Case Study: Challenger Program for Residencies at Baton Rouge General Medical Center, Baton Rouge, LA
February 11, 2008
I hope that you received my recent letter and brochure containing an overview of the Challenger Program for Residencies™ (CPR™).
Our current CPR™ subscribers use our flexible education platform for a wide variety of purposes. I thought you might like to
hear about how one of our CPR™ Library subscribers is employing CPR™, so this letter contains a brief case study of just such an
application!
Baton Rouge General Medical Center's Family Medicine Residency is located in Baton Rouge, LA. The Program Director is Rob
Chasuk, MD. The Program Coordinator is Sandra Wiley. Baton Rouge purchased a CPR™ Library Subscription in the summer of 2007
and currently has 21 residents enrolled in their installation.
Dr. Chasuk and Sandra Wiley were the driving forces involved in bringing CPR™ to BRGFM. Initially, they were interested in CPR™
for two major purposes:
- To improve their documentation of the medical knowledge core competency required by the RRC. They saw CPR™ as a way to
give their residents learning material, ensure that they were completing the material, and measure their performance.
- To assign content to their residents that would improve their in-service scores.
BRGFM began by customizing Challenger's content to create readings and assessments for two rotations for each PGY in September
2007 and assigned these customized curriculum modules to the residents in those rotations. Each month, they added 2-4 rotations
to their customized curriculum design. All of their major rotations now have customized curriculum assignments from CPR™. They
have also gone back and refined some of their original customized curriculum assignments based upon resident and faculty
feedback.
Where does BRGFM go from here with CPR™? Here is a brief menu of their planned activities:
- BRGFM will create and roll out customized curriculum for their elective rotations that have not been assigned Challenger
curriculum as of yet.
- BRGFM will be assigning some Challenger modules for residents to complete by certain landmarks in their tenure at the
program, rather than just assigning content by rotation. One example of this is Challenger's ECG Interpretation training, which
BRGFM wants all of their PGY1 residents to complete.
- BRGFM plans to integrate more text content into their 2008 updates to their customized curriculum modules.
- BRGFM will begin to use Challenger's integrated Reporting Package to identify areas of resident weakness and assign
remediation in these designated areas.
- BRGFM has seven faculty accounts and will be promoting Challenger as a CME resource for these faculty members.
BRGFM has also selected to use the integrated eResidency Residency Management System that is included with the CPR™ Library
Subscription.
The management of Challenger Corporation is grateful to Baton Rouge General Medical Center's Family Medicine Residency and their
faculty for the information used in this case study and for their collaboration with us to improve resident training and
evaluation.
