Case Study: Challenger Program for Residencies at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center, Department of Medicine, Phoenix, AZ
February 11, 2008
I hope that you received my recent letter and brochure containing an overview of the Challenger Program for Residencies™ (CPR™).
Our current CPR™ subscribers use our flexible education platform for a wide variety of purposes. I thought you might like to
hear about how one of our CPR™ subscribers is employing CPR™, so this letter contains a brief case study of just such an
application!
Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center's Medicine Residency is located in Phoenix, AZ. The Program Director is Alan Liebowitz, MD.
Cheryl O'Malley, MD, and Brenda Shinar, MD, are Associate Program Directors in the program that are managing the integration of the
CPR™ system. BGSMC is one of 17 institutions nationwide identified by the Residency Review Committee for Internal Medicine as an
original member of their Education Innovations Project for internal medicine.
I met Drs. Liebowitz and O'Malley at the 2005 Fall APDIM conference in Cleveland and they became the driving forces involved in
bringing CPR™ to BGSMC. Initially, they were most attracted to the reporting features that Challenger offered. Prior to
enrolling in CPR™, they assigned MKSAP and MedStudy as board review for residents, but had difficulty documenting compliance with
completed assignments. BGSMC purchased 48 resident slots in the CPR™ system in 2006 and enrolled their PGY2 and PGY3 classes and
chief residents in CPR™. Six PGY3 residents were assigned required remediation from Challenger and it was used as a self-study
tool for the remaining residents.
BGSMC has now started integrating the CPR™ further into their curriculum and assessment design in the following ways:
- As of February 2008, BGSMC is using the CPR™ system for delivering and scoring their end of the month testing. Each test
covers a didactic topic assigned to all residents to review for that month. The tests include twenty questions selected by BGSMC from
Challenger and their own internal sources. The test will be delivered to the residents via the CPR™ platform during the last week
of each month. Each resident will be given one hour to complete the test. Then, BGSMC faculty will be able to use the Challenger
Reporting Package to pull individual score data and statistical information by class and for the program on the results of the
testing.
- BGSMC is designing a Customized Curriculum using CPR™ that will deliver learning material and assessments for its residents
by rotation. BGSMC can pull content from Challenger along with other internal resources to create this curriculum. Once the curriculum
is built, BGSMC residents will be able to access all of their rotation reading assignments, pretests and posttests in the CPR™
system.
- Challenger is creating a 150 question board preparation assessment test for BGSMC to use as part of its end of the year
comprehensive board review course.
- BGSMC will be the beta site for Challenger's spring release of the Challenger/Cecil Internal Medicine product (for more
information on this release, please see Challenger's December press release)
BGSMC and Challenger have also initiated a partnership by introducing a Junior Editor System with Banner's chief residents.
This agreement allows BGSMC chief residents to review subtopics in Challenger for currency and be paid for their contribution as well as
receiving peer-reviewed publication credit. The faculty member supervising the project, Dr. Brenda Shinar, receives credit as a Section
Editor for Challenger and CME credit for her time spent reviewing the residents' work.
The management of Challenger Corporation is grateful to Banner Good Samaritan's Medicine Residency and their faculty for the
information used in this case study and for their collaboration with us to improve resident training and evaluation.
