Question:
An 8-year-old boy avulsed a tooth in a bicycle
accident in which he ran into a fence. His left upper incisor is
avulsed. Appropriate steps include all of the following EXCEPT:

- X-rays should be taken to exclude displacement of a
missing tooth into the gingiva or alveolar bone and late
complications thereof.
- Advise his parent or guardian to immediately rinse the tooth (after
covering the drain!) and replace in the socket; if
unsuccessful, place the tooth in the cheek pouch or a glass
of milk. Instruct the patient to go immediately to the
dentist or emergency department.
- Scrub the tooth with sterile gauze.
- Rinse root under a saline stream, evacuate socket clots,
and reimplant.
- Primary tooth: reimplantation is not required and may
result in ankylosis.
Answer: C
Remediation: To avoid loss of
viable periodontal cells, do not scrub the tooth.
