Question:

An 8-year-old boy avulsed a tooth in a bicycle accident in which he ran into a fence. His left upper incisor is avulsed. Appropriate steps include all of the following EXCEPT:

Answer Options:
  1. X-rays should be taken to exclude displacement of a missing tooth into the gingiva or alveolar bone and late complications thereof.
  2. Advise his parent or guardian to immediately rinse the tooth (after covering the drain!) and replace in the socket; if unsuccessful, place the tooth in the cheek pouch or a glass of milk. Instruct the patient to go immediately to the dentist or emergency department.
  3. Scrub the tooth with sterile gauze.
  4. Rinse root under a saline stream, evacuate socket clots, and reimplant.
  5. Primary tooth: reimplantation is not required and may result in ankylosis.

Remediation:
To avoid loss of viable periodontal cells, do not scrub the tooth.
