Question:
Most spiders are insectivores. While biting they inject
neurotoxins (for paralysis) and tissue lysins (to digest the prey's tissues). The volume is
usually too small to be hazardous to humans, although it is quite hazardous to insects! In the
U.S., most spider bites occur in the southern states during the warmer months. Significantly toxic
U.S. species include all of the following EXCEPT:
- brown recluse (Loxosceles reclusa)
- black widow (Latrodectus mactans or hesperus)
- redleg spider in Florida (Latrodectus bishopi)
- tarantulas
