Question:
Vasculitis is characterized by inflammation, necrosis and
microhemorrhage or obstruction of blood vessels. It may be primary or secondary as a result of
infectious or autoimmune diseases. Large or small vessels may be involved, and the process may
be focal or diffuse; any organ system may be involved. Vasculitic disorders include all of the
following EXCEPT:
- Henoch-Schonlein purpura
- diabetic angiopathy
- systemic necrotizing vasculitis (includes polyarteritis nodosa and allergic angiitis)
- Wegener's granulomatosis
- Takayasu's arteritis
- thromboangiitis obliterans (Buerger's disease), Kawasaki disease, and Behcet's syndrome
- temporal arteritis (closely associated with polymyalgia rheumatica)
- predominantly cutaneous vasculitis (hypersensitivity vasculitis; includes serum-sickness, drug-induced vasculitis, and vasculitis associated with infection, collagen vascular disease, or neoplasm)
