Dr. James Wagner is an emergency resident at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine Chattanooga and Erlanger Hospital, a major teaching hospital and provides the following assets and services for the catchment area spanning Southeast Tennessee, North Georgia, West North Carolina, and Northeast Alabama. He's a Challenger customer.
He states:
"I just got my in service results back for year 2 of my EM residency. Although I did not do as well as last year (i.e. highest score) because 6 people out of the 5,300 Emergency Medicine residents in the US made higher scores, I still made in the > 99 percentile.
Like most residents, I use a variety of study resources to prepare for my in-service exams and I’ve found Challenger to be my most valuable review asset. Residents should try Challenger. There are lots of popular “shortcuts” out there, but Challenger’s the only one I’ve found that imparts a ton of knowledge in minimal study time. And it sticks too. Nice, solid Q&A. I just can't say enough.
When I consider the fact that my professional output is based on my education, it only makes sense to develop the habitual use of the best CME and exam review. Challenger’s really worked for me and I plan on using their products for a long time. It really works."
Dr. Wagner's success illustrates two important points regarding resident training and ongoing CME activity.
First, Dr. Wagner purchased Challenger on his own to better himself - and it's paid off. He's a shining example of how residents can excel if self-motivated to be cognitively prepared at all times. If Dr. Wagner's case is any indication, residents should start to adopt the notion early on in their training that their career starts with their clinical knowledge. It's not enough to be spoon-fed by faculty or simply "review when you have to."
Secondly, adjunct education to traditional rounds works. Dr. Wagner simply took a pro-active step for the well-being of his patients, his institution, and his own career, but institutions are gradually moving on the idea. Adjunct electronic training and testing systems, like the ones Challenger provides, allow institutions to provide clinical training resources 24/7, test on that material, and track the performance results on a more frequent basis than allowed by in-training exams. Challenger institutional clients report on average a 14% increase in in-training exam scores when Challenger online learning activities are required. A resident class of "wagners" would make any program stand out nationally.
We're proud of Dr. Wagner's success and feel that Dr. Wagner will likely be a very prized commodity once he turns out. You can't teach everything after all. Some things are built in. Congratulations, Jim! We're honored by your patronage.
